poems of Jerusalem

The Burnt House-be sure to visit when in Jerusalem

“The Burnt House” Jerusalem

A whitened bone

leans on the balustrade of history

with the Roman spear nearby.

Jars of ceramic lie

blackened by fire

that tore through the Temple walls

that destroyed the hegemony of a people.

A spiral disperses through the history books.

Pages leaf,

scarlet and black thrust forward

mists shroud the missing stones

powdery dusts cover footsteps long silent.

We remain awhile,

peer through the beams of time.

Ghosts slip off our clothes

as we climb the stairs

to daylight

   JERUSALEM

A song through jagged centuries of time

Rising lilting on the wind, falling

With the arrow's whine

Living in the endless thoughts of men,

Fired by peoples’ souls and pen.

Walls have risen, heavy blocks upon the virgin rock

Years cementing cracks as strong as any lock

With tears that washed the streets and stones

That laughed from uplifted heads or streamed

from blooded bones

Wrested from a desert of granite hills

And fed with love and oil from olive mills

Terraces stepped with soil and stopped by stony walls

As clouds raced across the earth, and raindrops fell.

With armoured keen-edged sword and shield

Battalions thundered from the North

Swept and felled the farmer in his field

Until his downtrodden faith brought the soldier forth.

How did Two Stones move this tiny land?

Ten words, chiseled by an unseen hand

Deserts blooming where once the sand lay bare

That past centuries destroyed -

Now I claim my share.

Jerusalem is mine, as from the rubble and shards of clay

I came to comfort her when all around dismay

Carved to shape the bricks from dirt and dust.

I helped build to earn her trust..............................
